Indiana Search Dog
Conference
Camp Atterbury, Indiana
18-21 September 2008
The National Search Dog Alliance announces its inaugural
conference to be held September 18-21, 2008, at the Indiana Department of
Homeland Security, Division of Training, Mari Hulman George Search and Rescue
Training Center, Camp Atterbury, Edinburgh, Indiana. Planned to appear by the
end of March is a page on the NSDA website (
www.n-sda.org ) listing each of the instructors and their bios,
information about camping, barracks, hotels and other details. This
information will also be placed on the Yahoo conference site.
The yahoo group can be found at
http://tech.groups.yahoo . com/NSDA-conference08. Set up a Yahoo
account by typing in a user name and password. A registration form can be
downloaded and returned by mail. Additional photos have been taken and will be
posted soon.
For those wanting to stay in the barracks, that information will need to be
supplied at the time of registration. A registration form is attached to this
month's NSDA newsletter which can be found at:
http://www.n-sda.org/newsletter.php.
If staying in the barracks, all bedding must be brought. Canines are only
permitted if crated due to a bad experience with a former group. Open showers
are available.
Permission has been obtained to search a C-130 airplane and numerous FEMA
trailers. For those planning to work the disaster rubble piles, bring a proper
helmet, suitable boots, leather gloves, eye protection and knee pads. Also
reserved are building like structures made from cargo containers that are
outfitted like rooms. Searches will be filmed and participants will be given
the CD of their search. NSDA respectfully declined the use of pop-out figures,
flash-bangs and gas or smoke.
The NSDA, working for the betterment of SAR, in conjunction with Alice Hanan
in memory of K9 Stryker, will be offering two (2) scholarships to attend the
NSDA Training Conference in September. The scholarships will include a one
year membership in the NSDA, the cost of the conference and $300.00 in travel
expenses for each winning handler.
Readers are asked to nominate someone from their team or someone they know who
is deserving of a scholarship to attend the NSDA Conference. Someone who makes
it to every training, every call out, volunteers to organize activities,
supports team members and fellow searchers and contributes to SAR in general,
but whose funds prevent them from attending training seminars would be a
prefect candidate. Submit the nominee's SAR history and circumstances in 750
words or less to Norma Snelling at
snelling@olypen.com, by May 1st.

Scot Hansen Self-Defense for
Trail Riders Clinics
4-5 October 2008
Washington DC Area
Scot Hansen is coming to the Washington DC
area to present his Self-Defense for Trail Riders Clinics, on October 4th and
5th 2008.
The TROTSAR Search & Rescue Mounted Team Inc. is hosting this event.
Scot is a nationally known equine practitioner and has developed his clinic for
trail riders who wanted to know how they could use their horse to defend against
a human predator on the trail. It is a well-known fact that crime against
persons have skyrocketed in local, state and federal parks throughout the
country. Horseback riders need to be aware of the criminal element that prowls
our bridle paths and riding trails. You as a trail rider need to be prepared to
safely avoid or deal with such an encounter.
Each clinic is a three-hour session that teaches riders how to recognize
predator behavior, how to avoid an attack, how to stay safely in the saddle if
you are approached or assaulted, and how to teach your horse how to help you
escape safely. The clinic is an amazing experience and a great way to learn some
of the same techniques that mounted police officers use for crowd control. Scot
[himself] presents the techniques in a non-threatening way that helps both
people and horses learn progressively. This clinic also provides the riders with
some real-life experience in a safe and friendly environment to see just how
they would react and more importantly how their horse might react. The clinic is
recommended for persons who are trail riders, members of mounted search and
rescue teams or volunteer mounted patrol units.
Each clinic is limited to only 10 horse and riders per clinic, at a cost of $100
dollars per clinic. There will also be 10 slots available for those who wish the
audit (without horse) at the cost of $25.00 dollars per clinic. Morning clinics
begin at 9:00am and afternoon clinics begin at 1:30pm on both Saturday and
Sunday. The clinics will be held in an indoor arena near Bryans Road Maryland
(zip code 20616), which is approximately 30 minutes from (Old Town) Alexandria
Virginia, via the Capital Beltway (exit 3 south) onto Indian Head Highway.
Additional details and directions will be provided once payment
is received. To request an online registration packet please email:

The secondary device video is available through the Office

Synopses of that video and two others follow below. Also
currently in production are videos on Incident Command, Unified Command, and
Responding to a WMD/Haz-Mat Crime Scene. These are in addition to the
monthly CoMNET and Live Response programs that DOJ co-sponsors with TSWG and
FEMA. http://www.ojp.usdoj.gov/odp/docs/comnet.htm

Surviving the Secondary Device - the Rules Have Changed Video
Produced in partnership with the Georgia Emergency Management Agency, this video
is designed to assist public safety officials in making informed decisions
concerning the real potential of secondary explosive devices. These devices,
which detonate after the initial explosion, target blast survivors, other
individuals who converge on the scene, and, more often, responding public safety
personnel. The possibility of secondary devices require that public safety
officials not only look at how to protect the lives our citizens, but how to
protect the responders. This video discusses policies and procedures for
effectively responding to and managing a bomb incident, and for better ensuring
the safety of the public and the emergency responder.
Surviving Weapons of Mass Destruction Video
The threat of terrorist incidents involving chemical or biological agents is
very real. This training video is designed to enhance the survival and safety of
emergency responders during such incidents. Although protecting the public is
the principal mission of all public safety agencies, it is also important that
emergency responders do not forget their own safety. This video, produced in
partnership with the Georgia Emergency Management Agency, approaches safety from
the individual responder and an agency perspective. Weapons of Mass Destruction
- the First Responder Video
Being prepared for incidents involving weapons of mass destruction means knowing
what to look for and how to react. Preparation means that all emergency response
agencies, including law enforcement, fire, emergency medical services and
others, at all levels of government, work together in responding to such events.
This video, produced in partnership with the City of Seattle Fire Department,
was prepared to familiarize emergency responders with steps they can take to
mitigate the effects of such incidents and to better ensure their own and the
public's safety.
Hope this info is helpful.

2008 Course Schedule
June – Urban Trailing – 3 days – contract class – Minneapolis , MN
Andy Rebmann
Disaster – 3 days – contract class – Minneapolis , MN
Marcia Koenig
This is our schedule for 2008. Contract classes are ones we're
doing for the members of a single unit and are not open to the general public.
The only two open classes so far is the basic cadaver in California which anyone
can attend and the cadaver workshop in Alaska which any Alaskan dog handler can
attend.
We've had a lot of changes in our lives, so won't be traveling out of town much
in 2008. In June I got a German Shepherd puppy from Jody
Potter who has chosen or bred our other dogs. Coyote is still doing well, but is
13 years old, so I got a puppy to train. Raven is a Coyote clone – energetic,
crazy and a handful. In September, Andy's dog Griz died suddenly at 11 from a
tumor on his heart. This was totally unexpected as Griz was working up until the
end with no signs of illness. This left me with two dogs and Andy with none.
After much consideration, Andy got a German Shepherd puppy from Kathy Holbert.
Carlo is two months younger than Raven. It's a zoo around here; but we're doing
our best to separate them much of the time and to each train our own dog. Both
dogs have much potential and are doing great jobs in search training; we just
have to survive their puppyhoods.
In addition, I am tutoring part-time five days a week where my daughter teaches
first grade English language learners.
That leaves us with little time to travel as we need to concentrate on our
puppies' obedience and search training.
If you want a class:
1. Basic cadaver class – This is the first basic cadaver class we've given in
three years. If you want a basic cadaver class, try to make
the one in Chico , CA as it probably will be the only basic cadaver class in
2008.
2. If your unit wants another type of class, one of the other of us would be
available to do a class for your unit. Contact me for more
information regarding contract class fees:
marciakoenig@earthlink.net
3. Classes in WA State – We will be adding classes in WA State depending on what
people want. We will charge less for these classes
as we don't need to travel and get dog sitters. Let me know what you're
interested in: marciakoenig@earthlink.net
